Carnival CEO Josh Weinstein reveals record demand for cruise line on “Craman Countdown.”
The CDC’s top 10 worst cruise ship hygiene scores for 2024 were published after officials in the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) randomly selected and inspected ships.
A “100” score is perfect, and the vast majority of ships at sea earn a “95” score. Anything below 85 is considered unacceptable in the VSP system and must be corrected immediately.
VSP’s goal is to “assist the cruise industry in preventing and controlling the spread of GI (gastrointestinal) diseases.”

According to the CDC, 10 outbreaks of bacteria and viruses, primarily norovirus, have been recorded on cruise ships this year.
This year’s lowest score was 62. According to Business Insider, this is believed to be tied with Lederij Clipper Stud Amsterdam’s Stade Amsterdam as the sixth-lowest CDC score in VSP history.

According to the VSP website, “vessels are responsible for correcting all violations. Certain serious violations must be corrected immediately.”
For non-serious violations, vessels must submit a corrective action report to CDC within up to two weeks. Areas where food is prepared or served are of high interest to CDC inspectors.
Vessels subject to inspection under the VSP are “vessels with international itineraries, U.S. ports, and passenger counts exceeding 13,” according to the site.
