Carlos Prates proved his hype was justified with a great performance in his first main event at UFC Fight Night 247, likely securing him the Rookie of the Year award.
At UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Preetz (21-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) had no easy challenges in the cramped cage. He was scheduled to face Neil Magny, a mainstay in the UFC welterweight rankings, and the Brazilian made the fight look relatively easy. Preetz left Magny (29-13 MMA, 22-12 UFC) lying motionless on the canvas at 4:50 of the opening round.
The opening sequence reveals Magny’s game plan to settle the fight. Preetz overturned the first attempt and got the fight back on its feet. But Magny was determined to get his way and kept going for takedowns.
However, Prates created separation and increased the pressure on the front line with his attacks. A short right hand sent Magny flying to the canvas, but he didn’t follow it to the ground. Instead, Prates forced him to retreat and quickly returned to hunting.
A powerful yet sharp left hand hit Magny’s sweet spot and sent him crashing to the canvas for a walk-off knockout.

In the post-match interview, Prates called out another highly touted talent, Jacques Della Maddalena, for the showdown in Australia. It was a double request, so he could not only compete in the rankings, but also meet his daughter, who lives below. As a consolation, he said he would like a match with slugger Jeff Neal.
Since signing with the UFC last August following a knockout loss at Dana White’s Contender Series, Preetz has four wins, all of which were vicious finishes that earned him bonuses.
The Fighting Nerds product debuted in February and has racked up four wins this year, making a solid case for Rookie of the Year honors.
Magny was eliminated after losing his second straight match. The UFC welterweight wins leader has struggled to gain momentum in recent years, having won and lost since 2022.
