NEWTON — The Marshalltown football team fell to 0-4 for the fourth straight year with a 35-0 loss to Newton on Friday night at H.A. Lynn Stadium.
It’s the Bobcats’ first shutout loss since a 45-0 defeat at home to Newton last year.
Unofficially, the Bobcats were outshot, 440-27, by the host Cardinals (3-1), who celebrated homecoming with a whirlwind first half. Newton scored four of his five touchdowns from 48 yards or more, including a 66-yard dash to the end zone by Riley Trace on the game’s second play.
Newton quarterback Kayden Klein was 2-of-4 for 128 yards in a 2:39 second quarter, including an 80-yard touchdown pass to Cade Bauer and a 48-yard touchdown pass to Finn Martin. There was a safety and the Cardinals caught Marshalltown punter Johan Gomez in the end zone after a low snap.
Klein added an 8-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Isaiah Hansen rounded out Newton’s scoring with a 57-yard dash in the second quarter.
Hansen had 107 yards on 10 carries for the Cardinals, who averaged 12.9 yards per play on offense.
The Bobcat defense managed to hold on by forcing three turnovers: Jamison Niehaus intercepted a pass, Mokamad Pramana forced and recovered a fumble and Lincoln Barker felled on a fumble forced by Jonathan Schafer.
Marshalltown was led by sophomore running back Tyler England, who had 38 yards on 15 carries. England had a 50-yard touchdown run called back for holding in the fourth quarter, giving the Bobcats their first shutout win of the season. Ethan Gorsuch added 13 yards on two carries and Davis Ragland had 12 yards on five carries.
MHS quarterback Jacob Hayes was sacked five times and completed just two passes, including a four-yard pass to Zane Moore.
“I think the takeaway from tonight’s game is I did a poor job of preparing my team mentally,” MHS head coach Adam Goodbin said, “I think we made too many mistakes as a team. We weren’t on the field when we should have been, so we’ve got to get better.”
Marshalltown will host consecutive home games at Leonard Cole Field, beginning with a showdown against Ottumwa on Sept. 27. The Bobcats will honor their 2009 Class 4A state football finalist team during the pregame awards ceremony.
