NEW ULM — Thomas Campbell shot a 4-under 67 to win the professional division of the 2024 Riverbend Business Products Pro-Am on Monday at New Ulm Country Club.
Campbell finished two strokes ahead of Grant Shafanski, Grant Hansen and Ryan Poulsen, who all finished tied for second with shots of 69. Campbell won the tournament’s top prize of $850.
Campbell, a native of New Zealand who now lives in Savage, Minnesota, said Monday’s course went smoothly.
“The course was in good condition.” He said. “The greens were rolling really well. I was a little slow getting the ball to the hole, but other than that, if I could get it on the line and get the speed right, the putts would go in.”
Despite his good shot of 67, Campbell said he has done better in this tournament before and believes he has won it three times.
“It was fine.” He said: “I have high expectations of myself, and although I missed three or four short putts that I wanted to make, I made the good putts when I needed them. I think I shot 64 the first year I came, but I played without knowing anything about the course. This course is a bit odd, so it’s probably better if you don’t know its quirks (laughs).”
“But I hit some good shots. The 16th hole was a driveable hole and I hit it with a 3-wood to a foot. That got me started. I think I started off with a birdie. I two-putted for birdie on the 13th hole and then hit it to a foot on the 16th hole. I was 3 under when I started. I just made a lot of pars.”
Campbell finished with 13 pars, three birdies and one eagle.
Jeff Sorenson shot 70 to finish fifth in the pro division.
In the amateur individual low-gross division, Ethan Kraus took first place with a shot of 72, followed by Garrett Soukup (73) and Nate Weisenberger (76). Tom Steinbach, Jackson Alness and Jeff Ferrell were tied for fourth with shots of 77 each.
In the amateur individual low net, Tom Firth took first place with a shot of 63, Leon Kettner was second (64), Duane Ristow was third (64), Tom Steinbach was fourth (65), Paul Roberts was fifth (66) and Dave Grunert was sixth (66).
In the team event, Team 9A, consisting of Eric Chiles, Leon Kettner, Joe Mettler, Terry Steinbach and Rick Hulk, took first place with a top score of -34, Team 7 (Jeff Sorenson, Bob Gogue, Dennis Spindler, Duane Matthews and Jeff Maass) took second place with -28, and Team 5B (Grant Shafanski, Michael Baker, Angela Vadnais, Brad Brekke and Ann Baker) took third place with -21. Team 13A (Ryan Paulsen, Rick Kamm, Brandon Johnson, Greg Johnson and Tyler Antonsen) tied for fourth place with Team 13A (Will Hedberg, Kevin Bassett, Brian Deinken, Dave Grunert and Dave Brown) with -20.
