On Oct. 29, a group of businesses across the state were recognized at the 24th Annual Maine Family Business Awards Gala, hosted by Maine News Center weekday anchor Amanda Hill. The event was held at Thompson’s Point in BrickSouth, Portland. This venue was chosen to accommodate the nearly 500 guests who gather for this event each year.
The event also marked the 30th anniversary of the Family Business Association and honored the organization’s late champion Maddie Colson, according to an Oct. 30 news release. Presented by the Institute in partnership with MEMIC, the award recognizes exemplary Maine businesses that demonstrate excellence in family involvement, business success, and commitment to employees, customers, and communities. It is. Out of 500 nominations, 33 semi-finalists competed for seven awards. An independent panel of judges, facilitated by Capozza Floor Covering Center President Joe Capozza III, selected the winners from among 25 finalists representing small and large family-owned businesses from across Maine.
McDougall Orchards in Springvale and Hussey Seating in North Berwick are among the businesses recognized.
McDougall Orchards in Springvale has won the Geiger Environmental Leadership Award, which recognizes companies that set the standard for sustainability. According to a news release, “The land on which McDougall Orchards operates has been farmed by the same family for generations since 1776. As one judge pointed out, this business literally It’s as old as our country.” But they never stopped looking forward. They have worked to improve their environmental footprint by using biodiesel, planting native plants, finding natural ways to avoid pests, and working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. They also demonstrated exemplary land management. ”
Hussey Seating Company of North Berwick received the M&T Bank Innovation & Technology Award for developing a new method, idea or product that solves a problem or significantly improves on previous solutions to a problem. According to a news release, “Since their first invention in 1835, Hussey Seating has continued to innovate and have been awarded 20 patents dating back to the 1930s. Here’s a fun fact: 50% of all K-12 schools have seating from this company somewhere in their buildings. is responsible for creating many manufacturing jobs right here in Maine.”
