Indiana Chamber of Commerce CEO speaks at Gary luncheon
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce president and CEO will be the featured speaker at the Gary Chamber of Commerce’s monthly meeting in September, according to the announcement.
The event will be held at noon Sept. 9 at The Chateau Banquets, 530 W. 61st Ave. in Merrillville.
Vanessa Green-Sinders, president and CEO of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, will be the guest speaker. Green-Sinders became the first woman president and CEO of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce in January. According to the release, her knowledge of government issues, experience working for a Fortune 100 company and experience in senior positions in Congress make her well-qualified to lead business and contribute to the development of Indiana. Cost for the luncheon is $25 per person.

Murvan Announces $500,000 Grant to HealthLinc
Democratic Rep. Frank J. Mulvan of Highland recently announced a federal grant to Valparaiso Health Link through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Health Resources and Services Administration’s Accelerated Cancer Screening Program.
According to HHS, HealthLinc will receive $500,000 to partner directly with National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers to expedite access to care and treatment for cancer patients. In general, accelerated cancer screening programs aim to improve access to cancer.

Franciscans plan suicide prevention class for September 12
Franciscan Health has announced a free event aimed at raising awareness and preventing suicide on September 12th.
Franciscan Health Dyer’s Behavioral Health department will host its first public suicide awareness event in the hospital’s employee parking lot (24 Joliet St.) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to the Indiana State Department of Health, there have been 1,136 suicides in Indiana in 2022, with Lake County having the second-highest number of suicides in the state.
According to the statement, there will be prayers, memorials to those lost to suicide, testimonials and a variety of community resources for individuals and families in need. For more information, please contact Hansie Hawkins, Franciscan Community Education Coordinator.

Three Valparaiso police officers complete Northwestern University program
The Valparaiso Police Department recently announced that Officer Melanie Sheets, Detective Sergeant Chris Allison and Sergeant Jeremy Simpson graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Police Personnel and Command (SPSC).
The program was launched by the Center for Public Safety in 1983 and has graduated more than 21,000 students both domestically and internationally, according to the announcement.
The Police Staff and Command School offers advanced university level instruction with a total of 27 core educational blocks and additional optional blocks during each session. Key study topics include leadership, human resources, employee relations and organizational behavior.

Family medicine nurse joins the Franciscan Order
A family medicine nurse practitioner has joined the Francisco Physicians Network and is accepting new patients in Winfield, according to the announcement.
Serena Roggeveen earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Purdue University Northwest in Hammond and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Purdue University in West Lafayette.
In addition to family medicine, Roggeveen’s clinical interests include chronic disease management, preventive and primary care for all ages, and family-centered health care services. Call 219-662-9424.
PNW celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with events
Purdue University Northwest (PNW) will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events honoring the U.S. Hispanic and Latino communities on its Hammond and Westville campuses, according to a release.
This year’s annual celebration, which begins on September 16, has announced a variety of cultural and academic events, including a Hispanic Heritage Festival on September 22, a salsa dance night, a Hispanic Small Business Expo and a speech by Dr. Antonia Novello, the first Latina Surgeon General in the United States, on September 27.
