Wise obtains instructor certification
Sanibel Sea School announced that marine science educator Austin Wise has achieved American Canoeing Association (ACA) Level 2 Kayak Instructor Certification.
he took part in “Essentials for kayak touring” The course will be held at Gulf Coast Kayak in Cape Coral from November 16th to 19th. It was led by Mike Aronoff, an ACA instructor with over 40 years of paddling experience.
Wise certification ensures that Sanibel Sea School’s paddling program meets the highest safety and instructional standards, allowing us to provide an enriching and enjoyable experience.
He will lead the program, offering private paddling sessions for families and groups who want to explore Sanibel while learning about the area’s marine life. Sessions last 2 hours and are recommended for ages 14 and up. The cost is $75 per person and reservations are required.

Lee County TDC welcomes Chairman
The Lee County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) on November 19 appointed Chairman Kevin Ruane as the Chairman of the Lee County Tourism Development Council (TDC).
The Presidency took effect immediately.
District 1 Commissioner Ruan replaced Commissioner Cecil Pendergrass.
Mr. Luan was first elected to the BoCC Council in 2020 after serving as the mayor of Sanibel for more than 10 years. He ran unopposed for a second term in 2024. After Hurricane Ian, Mr. Luan was appointed by his fellow commissioners to chair the Lee County Long Term Recovery Task Force.
A longtime resident of Southwest Florida, Luann had been visiting Sanibel for 20 years before purchasing her home in 2004. In the aftermath of Hurricane Charlie, he set his sights on a career in public service and signed on as a member of Sanibel’s damage assessment team.
Mr. Ruane was appointed to the Sanibel City Council in 2007 on an interim basis. He was elected later that year, re-elected in 2009, and appointed mayor in 2010. Mr. Ruan was re-elected in 2013 and 2017. , served as a TDC member for about 7 years.
