East Palestinian Bulldog Basketball Facebook East Palestinian boys basketball team played Western Reserve on Saturday at the most famous high school basketball gym in film history. The Blue Devils outperformed the Bulldogs 50-41 at “Hoosier Gym” in Nighttown, Indiana.
NIGHT STOWN, IN – East Palestine and Western Reserve basketball teams got a full experience of Indiana High School basketball on Saturday as the two teams faced off at the gym, which became famous for the 1986 film “Hoosiers”.
The Blue Devils won 50-41 on the floor where Gene Hackman roamed as coach while filming the famous film in the gymnasium of the former Nighttown Community School.
Drew Bikeloft led the Bulldogs (10-11) with 14 points, four rebounds and two steels, while Owen Zurjavić received 12 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Landyn Cope offered 9 points and 3 rebounds. Kyler Bourne had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
In the Western Reserve (13-9), Connor Cochran scored 23 points.
The gym was built in 1921 and served the Nightstown community until it closed in 1966. “Hoosiers” I thought it would be a good substitute for the fictional Hickory Huskers gymnasium.
The film is based almost entirely on the story of the 1954 Milan High School Indiana State Championship team and is considered one of the best American sports films of all time.
After the school next to the gym was closed in 1988, “Hoosier Gym” was spared from a destruction ball and transformed into a museum dedicated to film and basketball history at Indiana High School. Approximately 80 games are played on the floor each year.
Garrett Bill Garfield and Waterloo, Elyria Catholic and Elyria Open Door Christian also played games at that gym this season.
In Jayvee Action, Western Reserve scored 45-34. For Palestine, Brad Bartels added 10 points and Jackson Robb added 5 points.
East Palestine will open tournament play at Newton Falls on Friday.
