Two British citizens detained in Iran have been charged with spying, according to Iran’s Mizan News Agency.
The pair reported being charged Tuesday, where they allegedly gathered information in different parts of the country.
Iranian elite revolutionary security guards have arrested dozens of foreigners and double citizens in recent years, mainly on espionage and security-related accusations.
The UK’s Foreign Ministry named the two Craig and Lindsay’s Foreman, and their families said on Saturday they were involved in ensuring that they were safe authorities and their safe return. .
“The detained individuals entered the country as tourists and gathered information in several states of the country,” Mizan said without detailing.
According to British media reports, the pair are a couple in their early 50s.
Mizan cited the judicial officer saying that the two were linked to the intelligence reporting agency and that an investigation into the alleged link was underway.
The couple admitted that they ignored warnings not to travel to the country as part of their “slightly odd” world bike trip.
Lindsay said in a Facebook post that by late December, he had “drived 12,499 miles in 13 countries” across locations such as Italy, Albania, Greece and Turkey.
According to social networks, Lindsay, a doctoral life coach, said he had a “great time” while Craig, a carpenter, praised “lovely people” in Iran.
In a social media post, the couple said they are running a research project on what makes a “good life.” Lindsay said she interviewed more than 360 people.
Iranian authorities accused them of having ties with Western intelligence reporting agencies, saying they are “cooperating with secret agencies related to hostile and Western intelligence reporting agencies.”
The couple said they moved from Armenia to Iran in December.
On Friday, the UK’s Foreign Ministry was in contact with Iranian authorities, saying it was “providing consul assistance to two British citizens detained in Iran.”
