Before the end of Week 1, the San Francisco 49ers stunned the NFL world, especially fantasy managers, with the news of Christian McCaffrey’s calf injury. It was severe enough that McCaffrey missed the game against the New York Jets. News of the injury broke about 90 minutes before kickoff, a game the 49ers ultimately won, 32-19.
As the season prepares for Week 2, Yahoo Sports will bring you the latest updates, news and notes from across the league.
Let’s start with the Niners’ all-world running back.
Kyle Shanahan said about Christian McCaffrey after the game
The 49ers only have a week to prepare for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings — will that be enough time for McCaffrey to play, or will Jordan Mason end up carrying the ball again?
Coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t say anything about McCaffrey’s status for Week 2, but responded to an ESPN report that said there was a “high chance” the running back won’t play next weekend.
“It’s amazing. The guy must be a god,” Shanahan said after the 49ers’ win over the Jets. “We just found out he’s not going to play today. We have no idea how he’s going to feel tomorrow, the day after tomorrow. Until today, we thought he was playing all week, so who knows if he’s not going to play next week.”
Regarding McCaffrey’s foot injury, Shanahan said, “It’s been sore for the last couple weeks, but it’s getting better and we’re hopeful he’ll be better next week.”
Shanahan said Tuesday that McCaffrey would have played against the Jets in the playoffs. McCaffrey’s status is currently listed as day-to-day.
Puka Nacua to miss at least four games
Rams star wide receiver Puka Nacua has been placed on injured reserve after spraining his anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday night’s loss to Detroit, Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday, forcing Nacua to miss at least four games.
Nacua had four catches for 35 yards before leaving Sunday’s game, being carried off on a stretcher down the sideline after the second quarter and not returning.
Browns’ Njoku: “Every week”
Browns tight end David Njoku is being evaluated “week to week,” according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. Njoku injured his ankle during Cleveland’s blowout loss to Dallas. He will be evaluated on Monday and it is not yet known whether he will be available for the Browns’ Week 2 game against the Jaguars.
Justin Fields was inserted into the starter for Week 1 after Russell Wilson suffered a calf injury late in training camp, but the Steelers enter Week 2 with questions about their quarterback position after Fields threw for 156 yards in an 18-10 win at Atlanta.
Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Wilson would not practice fully on Wednesday as the team works to get Fields back under center, adding that Wilson “feels better today than he did over the weekend.”

Brown injured his knee in Sunday’s game against the Saints and will not return this season.
“It’s definitely a big loss. He was one of our best players. It’s going to be tough to replace him,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Tuesday, “But at the same time, we have some good players. I want them to know that and be encouraged. Just go out there and play with great technique and do your job and you don’t have to make special plays like Derrick did.”
“You do your job and help the guys on both sides. That’s the truth. If you can play team football with a lot of players, you can be successful.”
Brown, a 2023 Pro Bowl selection, set the NFL record for most tackles in a season by a defensive lineman last year with 103.

Tyreek Hill was issued two traffic tickets for careless driving and a seat belt violation for Sunday’s traffic violations, according to sources. Callie Campbell, who said police told him after the game that he was briefly handcuffed for “not following a direct command,” was not ultimately issued a ticket. The Miami-Dade Police Department told me this morning that they couldn’t yet provide details on why the careless driving ticket was issued or why Hill was placed face-down on the ground and handcuffed, due to an internal investigation. One of the officers on the scene is still being processed.
Hill was handcuffed outside Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium just hours before the Dolphins were set to play Jacksonville. He was eventually released and played in Miami’s 20-17 victory.
Hill told reporters after Sunday’s game that he had “no idea” why he was detained. “My mom didn’t raise me like that, so I was never disrespectful. I was never swearing,” Hill said. “I’m still trying to figure out why.”
