MARINA DEL REY — Fire officials are investigating a fire caused by a fireworks explosion aboard a luxury yacht that sank while docked in Marina del Rey Thursday.
According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the fire was reported just after 8:33 p.m. Wednesday and firefighters responded to 211 Basin A to extinguish the blaze on the boat, which was about three stories tall and 100 feet long.
“According to the vessel’s owner, there were 1,000 unused rounds of ammunition and fireworks on board,” the county fire marshal’s office said in a statement Thursday morning. “No firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire is still being determined.”
Multiple explosions echoed throughout the harbor as the Admiral was engulfed in flames.
CBS 2 footage from the scene showed the ship listing to one side before sinking in the harbor.
NBC 4 reported that an environmental disaster team was scheduled to arrive in Marina del Rey on Thursday to help clean up the burned ship.
Two passengers escaped the blaze uninjured, fire officials said, although ABC 7 reported one suffered a cut to his arm.
KTLA reported that the fire was caused by fireworks exploding on board the ship, endangering other ships and several buildings nearby.
