PLEASANT HILL — A grueling battle over 54 holes over three days ended with the Marshalltown boys golf team finishing in eighth place Wednesday at the Southeast Polk Invitational Tournament at Copper Creek Golf Club.
The Bobcats finished with three tournaments over three days, scoring a total of 319 points.
“We were playing well, but a lot of our guys had a hard time adjusting to the green,” MHS head coach Lucas Johnson said.
Marshalltown was led by senior Ty Faltis, who placed 22nd individually with a 4-over 75. Faltis shot a 3-over 38 over the first nine holes and a 1-over 37 over the last nine holes, highlighted by three birdies.
Faltis, a senior, averaged 74.75 in four events last week to lead MHS down the stretch.
“Ty Faltis continued to play solidly and put himself in good position to attack the pin,” Johnson said.
MHS freshman Joe Griesel took 33rd place with a round of 78 that included an impressive 1-under 35 despite a first-half score of 83 and a triple-bogey six on the par-3 12th hole in the second half. Griesel then birdied four of his final six holes to finish under par.
Bobcat sophomore Jacob Seberger was the team’s third-leading scorer on Wednesday, shooting 82 strokes, a day after shooting a season-best 100 on his home course. Senior Adam Boone and sophomore Parker Christen both shot 84 strokes to set Marshalltown’s final count score. Senior Eli Pauley also shot 87 strokes while battling back pain.
“Jacob Seberger made a great comeback after posting his worst score of the year the day after putting up a score,” Johnson said. “Eli Pauley hurt his back warming up on the range and wasn’t able to swing at 100 percent. Credit to him for hanging in there and finishing.”
Southeast Polk defeated West Des Moines Valley in the fifth scoring tiebreaker with both teams shooting one-over at 285. Dowling Catholic took third place at 294, led by medalist Dewell Anderson’s three-under 68.
Marshalltown’s demanding golf course will be closed for a week in preparation for the Iowa Alliance Conference Tournament, which MHS will host at Elmwood Country Club on Thursday, Oct. 3. The Bobcats’ district tournament will be held on Monday, Oct. 7 at Willow Creek Golf Course in West Des Moines.
“Thankfully, we have plenty of time off to prepare for tournament and district competition,” Johnson said.
