Billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently donated about $50 million to a nonprofit supporting Kamala Harris’ candidacy for U.S. president, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. . The donation to Future Forward, a major external fundraising organization supporting Harris, comes as Gates, who is running against Republican Donald Trump in the November 5 US presidential election, has not publicly supported the Democratic candidate. It was to be kept secret.
The NYT reported that Gates expressed “concerns” about what a second term for President Donald Trump might look like in a private phone call with friends and others earlier this year.
His charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is deeply concerned about potential cuts to family planning and global health programs if Trump is re-elected, the report said.
But Gates emphasized that he could work with either candidate.
In a statement responding to the NYT report, Gates emphasized his bipartisanship, but also said, “This election is unlike any other.”
“I support candidates who demonstrate a clear commitment to improving health care, reducing poverty, and fighting climate change in the United States and around the world,” he told the New York Times.
“While I have a long history of working with leaders across the political spectrum, this election is unlike any before and of unprecedented importance to Americans and the most vulnerable people around the world. It has a sexual nature,” he said.
In an interview with French newspaper France 24 in July, when Kamala Harris became the new Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden withdrew his re-election bid, Gates said, “I think it’s important to be younger and think about things like AI.” They welcomed the appearance of a person who can do the following.
Harris celebrated her 60th birthday last week, while her rival, Trump, is 78 years old, making her the oldest presidential candidate in U.S. history.
Gates’ ex-wife, philanthropist Melinda French Gates, previously publicly supported Harris, 60.
At least 81 billionaires have endorsed Harris in her fight against Trump, according to Forbes. However, Elon Musk, one of the richest men in the world, supports Trump.
