Bill Belichick knows a good opponent when he sees one.
The 72-year-old former New England Patriots head coach crossed paths with many opponents, building rivalries with the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers, and more. However, it wasn’t much of a rivalry, as the six-time Super Bowl champion Patriots were dominant overall.
Now a pseudo-media mogul, Belichick has a very unique perspective on it, being able to see the rest of the league’s toughest rivalries from a fresh perspective from 30,000 feet.
While reviewing the Week 11 schedule on the latest episode of the COACH podcast with confidante Matt Patricia, Belichick offered a classic one-liner to describe the heated nature between division rivals the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens: Dropped.
“The Ravens and Steelers aren’t against each other. They don’t make Christmas cards.”
“Those two teams don’t like each other,” he later continued. “This is going to be a really interesting match.”
The Steelers (7-2) lead the AFC North by just a half-game over the Ravens (7-3), who play at Acresure Stadium in Pittsburgh. As for Belichick’s analysis of the game itself? He kept it plain and simple:
“It’s a little bit of strength on top of strength,” Belichick explained. “If you look at the Pittsburgh defense and the Baltimore offense… (Lamar) Jackson’s Jackson. Pittsburgh’s Pittsburgh defense. (Mike) Tomlin’s Tomlin. There’s a lot of familiarity there and a lot of hate.”
As for Belichick himself? He dominated against both teams during his coaching career with the Patriots, going 9-5 against the Ravens and 14-4 against the Steelers.
