The Big 12 Conference was formed in 1994 and began in earnest with conference play in 1996. From the beginning, a Big 12 Championship Game was played between the winners of the North and South Divisions to determine the champion.
From 2010 to 2016, the championship game was suspended after the Big 12 Conference fell short of the NCAA-mandated 12-team requirement of using the championship game to determine the conference winner.
In 2017, the conference championship game returned with a slight change: instead of the division winner, the top two teams in the conference would play for the title.
