The 145-year-old New York baker denied on-air speculation that the store denied Whoopi Goldberg a special treat on her 69th birthday episode because of her political views.
Shortly after Mr. Goldberg wrapped up Wednesday’s episode of the show by tasting an entire batch of Charlotte Ruth’s desserts on Hot Topics Table, Mr. Goldberg did not reveal the name of the bakery that made the desserts, but it was her. speculated that they initially refused her order because of her political beliefs.
When Entertainment Weekly tracked down and contacted Halterman’s Bakery Co. on Staten Island, thanks to the distinctive packaging of Charlotte Ruth’s sweets, owner Jill Halterman told Goldberg admitted that she first requested the dessert two weeks ago, denying any insinuations that it wasn’t her. The order could be completed as a comment on Goldberg’s left-leaning politics.
“They asked us, but we had a problem with the boiler,” Holterman said, adding that Goldberg initially announced that he would be on the talk show on Nov. 6 and on Nov. 11. She added that she had requested a treat for The View’s broadcast on May 13th (both times), citing equipment uncertainty as “unfeasible.” The unidentified woman also admitted to picking up about 50 Charlotte Ruth desserts from the bakery at 7:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday. She added that she could make it, but didn’t want to commit in advance given the ongoing boiler issue. He added that he did not know what affiliation the woman who received the dessert belonged to. The View or not, it could have been there Wednesday morning.
Halterman said the building where she operates is nearly 100 years old, so equipment issues can sometimes get in the way of meeting requests, as was the case with Goldberg’s long-distance orders. .
“I said to Whoopi, ‘I can’t do it right now,’ there’s so much going on at the boiler,” she added. The building was built in 1930, so when she called me I was thinking of burning everything (hopefully) I didn’t have anything. ”
Halterman insists that “political ties were not the cause.”
Despite multiple attempts, a representative for The View did not provide comment to Entertainment Weekly. However, Goldberg released an Instagram video Thursday addressing the situation.
“So there seems to be a lot of talk about the dessert I requested on my birthday show. I never mentioned the name or location of the bakery. A few weeks before my birthday. “That’s a little strange, when I called and was told they couldn’t fulfill my birthday order due to equipment failure,” Goldberg said in the clip. “Somehow I was able to accept another 48 orders of the same dessert when someone else called without using my name. But it’s okay, guys. I’m delicious. Because I enjoyed the dessert and was happy and sweet.” There’s nothing better than a birthday. ”

“Today’s dessert for my birthday was one of my mother’s favorites from childhood. She always talked about it. It’s called Charlotte Russe. Whipped over sponge cake. It’s topped with cream and cherries, I must say.” , Charlotte Ruth has no political leanings, but the company that made these refused to make them for me,” Goldberg said, prompting panelist Sarah Haines to spit out her dessert on live TV. .
“No, let me explain,” Goldberg continued. “They said the oven was broken, but people went to pick it up anyway, so I won’t say who made it. It’s not because… I’m a woman, but maybe they don’t like my politics.” “But it’s okay, because, listen, this is my mom’s celebration.” Please take this and celebrate with me and my mother. Thank you for celebrating my birthday today. ”
