PITTSFORD — Salamanca head football coach Chad Bartoszek said after the No. 2 Warriors’ 42-20 victory over No. 5 East Rochester/Gananda in Saturday’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Far West Regional game. did not clog the
He is well aware of what is planned for Thanksgiving weekend. Their Round 4 semifinal opponent, Chenango Forks, needs no introduction.
“We know we’re facing a storied program,” Bartoszek said. “…We have our hands full.”
No. 2 Chenango Forks, which advanced to the state semifinals with a 42-7 victory over Section 3 General Brown, watched the matchup at Pittsford-Sutherland High School’s Ordiway Field and talked about the youth of Cattaraugus County. might be saying the same thing. Bombers won Section V.
Xavier Peters rushed for 235 yards and four touchdowns to lead top-ranked Salamanca (12-0) to an impressive victory and a ticket to the state semifinals for the second straight year. That game will be played at noon Nov. 30 at Vestal High School outside Binghamton.
Bartoszek said of Peters: “What a sweetheart. He showed a lot of heart and determination today in terms of just going all the way.” …The two guys in the middle were the backbreakers. He is a warrior for us. He’s been hacking games and today was the day he needed to brush up a bit. ”
Peters didn’t do it alone.
Corey Holleran and Quentin Brown each ran for scores, and quarterback Maddox Isaac added 112 yards on the ground for the game-winner, taking a 22-0 lead early in the second quarter before halftime. By now, the difference was 28-14.
The Game 5 champion Bombers (9-2) scored touchdowns on a 49-yard run by Kaderell Sneed Jr. and two TD passes by quarterback Ben Newman, and a touchdown by Ray Davion Allen in the second quarter. 5 yards to and 12 yards to Noah Mather in the third period.
The tone of the physical game was set on the first play from scrimmage, when Salamanca linebacker Zach Treatly held Newman scoreless.
“We had a lot of guys who played football…but Zach was the heart and soul of it,” Bartoszek said. “If he brings that physicality, we know we’ll be fine.”
Two plays later, teammate Kurt Kustenis recorded a sack, forcing an East Rochester/Gananda punt.
On the Warriors’ ensuing offensive possession, a 25-yard pass from Isaac to Holleran set up Peters, who scored on a 6-yard run. Isaac’s first of two two-point conversion aerials on Peyton Bradley gave Salamanca a lead it would never relinquish. Holleran and Brown had touchdown runs of 12 and 6 yards, respectively, pushing the Warriors’ advantage to three scores four minutes into the second period.
And although the Bombers fought back by halftime, Salamanca’s dominant run game was too much. In addition to his quick TD burst to start, Peters had runs from 22, 27 and 37 yards as offensive linemen Warrick Kyler, Tommy George, Kustenis, Kasen Hardy and Evan Spruce did their work up front. I hit paydirt.
Meanwhile, Holleran completed two passes in the fourth quarter, the last one in the final seconds, and was a threat on defense. Salamanca then lined up for victory and won the ball one last time.
“I’m really proud of the win,” Bartoszek said. “I don’t like how the penalty situation has turned out. It’s something we have to be able to cleanse. On some of that we won’t be able to win.”
Chenango Folks awaits.
