Neil Perry, who had served as Methuen’s mayor since 2020, died at age 65, according to city officials. Perry, a lifelong Methuen resident and Democrat, died Saturday. He was elected mayor in 2019 and sworn in in January 2020. City officials said Perry has battled numerous health issues over the past few years, but has tackled each challenge with determination while continuing his mayoral career. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Grocery store cashiers in California will no longer have a “paper or plastic” choice under a new ban on plastic shopping bags signed into law Sunday by Gov. Gavin Newsom. California had already banned thin plastic shopping bags in supermarkets and other stores, but shoppers could buy bags made from thicker plastic that was supposed to be reusable and recyclable. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health issued a public health advisory after a cyanobacteria bloom was confirmed in the Charles River downstream of the Longfellow Bridge. The Charles River Watershed Association said it is the first bloom in the river in four years. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are naturally occurring microorganisms found in rivers, lakes, and ponds. Cyanobacteria release harmful cyanotoxins that can pose serious health risks, especially to pets and young children.
