Perhaps inspired by Donald Trump’s return to the White House after a crushing defeat in 2020, Anthony Weiner, a registered sex offender and disgraced former congressman, is now He said he is considering returning.
Weiner, who spent nearly two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to sending obscene material to a minor, announced on his weekly radio show Saturday that he may run for lower Manhattan City Council. He said there is.
“I’m thinking about it,” he said, according to City & State. “I struggle with that. I love doing this work in radio, but I want to be helpful.”
Mr. Weiner, a 60-year-old Democrat, said he wanted to return to public office because his party colleagues were “fighting with knives over library books.” He added that he is passionate about fighting issues such as crime, homelessness and a lack of housing in his hometown.
Mr. Weiner served on the New York City Council from 1992 to 1998 and was elected to New York’s 9th Congressional District in 1999. He was re-elected every two years and resigned in 2011 amid a sexting scandal in which he sent mass photos of himself. The boxer interacted with multiple women and teenagers on Twitter.
The Brooklyn native tried to make a comeback by running for mayor of New York City in 2013, but that attempt was derailed by a new sexting scandal. He ultimately finished fifth in the Democratic primary.
Weiner ultimately pleaded guilty in 2017 to sexting a 15-year-old girl and was sentenced to 21 months in prison. That same year, his then-wife, former Hillary Clinton adviser Huma Abedin, filed for divorce after seven years of marriage and took custody of their elementary school-aged son.
Despite a long rap sheet that would surely ruin his political career, Weiner still seems to think he has a chance to take over the seat from term-limited Carlina Rivera.
“It’s a lot, a lot, about my past, about my addiction, about my acting, about my career,” he said, according to City & State New York. I admitted it. “But we Democrats are always in a moment where it seems like we’re having knife fights with library books.”
