Angelina Jolie brought the trend of quiet luxury to Telluride, Colo., on Saturday for the city’s annual film festival. The actress attended a screening of her new movie “Maria,” which debuted at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday.
Jolie opted for a cashmere Brunello Cucinelli ensemble consisting of a plunging beige dress and matching bolero, which she paired with large black sunglasses, diamond-studded hoop earrings and nude leather pumps with buckle embellishment by Roger Vivier.
Pablo Larraín, director of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana dramas, is directing another famous woman in history, Maria, with Jolie playing the legendary soprano who spent the final years of her life in 1970s Paris.
Callas’s life story is far removed from the drama she starred in. She spent much of her childhood training, which led to a strained relationship with her mother that later evaporated altogether. She was also unlucky romantically: Her husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini, took her fortune during their divorce, and her boyfriend of nine years, businessman Aristotle Onassis, left her for Jackie Kennedy.
In Venice, Jolie also stuck to neutral hues at the red carpet premiere of her film “Maria,” choosing a custom Tamara Ralph ensemble consisting of an asymmetrically draped chiffon dress and faux-fur stole.
Last month, WWD exclusively announced that Jolie had become Tom Ford Beauty’s first celebrity spokesmodel.
In the new campaign images, Jolie wears the brand’s flagship runway lip color, Scarlet Rouge. “It’s a beautiful color and texture,” the actress said in an email. “A good red lip needs very little else; it’s applied with intention. That was part of the discussion.”
Quiet luxury, which has a major milestone in 2023, is here to stay, with brands like Dior, Carolina Herrera and Miu Miu showcasing sophisticated, premium basics. A minimalist aesthetic replaces flashy displays with understated luxury staples.
