Recently, a Crowdstrike outage left me stranded in Amsterdam for two days, which gave me the chance to spend a weekend exploring this amazing city. Amsterdam has 165 canals spanning over 60 miles. The canal roads offer some of the best car spotting in the world, with everything from the latest EVs and sports cars to iconic classics and cars you’ve never heard of. Every time I turned a corner, there was something cool to see.
Not only that, Amsterdam also has an incredible range of transport of all kinds: there are all sorts of interesting boats floating on the canals, including one with a big greenhouse for hotboxing that I’ll definitely try next time I’m there, strange motorbikes and tricycles, quads driven by teenagers, amphibious vehicles and floating wooden shoes.
Although the ultimate mode of transportation in Amsterdam is the bicycle, I didn’t take any photos of bicycles specifically because there are so many of them and they are in many of my photos. There are an estimated 881,000 bicycles in Amsterdam, which means there are more bicycles than people in the city. Bicycles rule the roads, weaving through pedestrians and trains and not seeming to follow the rules of the road at all. And no one is wearing a helmet, which is surprising to me. This is all built on a public transport system made up of buses, above-ground trains and the subway, which makes getting around the city even easier.
Anyway, take a look at this slideshow to see some of the coolest and most interesting vehicles I spotted during my time in Amsterdam.
