Donations appealed to help those affected by Hurricane Helen
One week after Hurricane Helen made landfall, the American Red Cross is working 24/7 with dozens of partners to get help to people as quickly as possible. Helen’s destruction covers a vast area, and it takes time to travel through damaged roads and reach divided communities.
Red Cross Humanitarian Services President Trevor Riggen said, “Massive relief efforts for Hurricane Helen are underway and we are working around the clock to support the people and communities devastated by this storm’s destruction. We are working on this system.” “Our hearts go out to all those affected and we want you to know that you are not alone. The Red Cross and our partners will continue to work with you in the coming days and weeks. We are there to provide shelter, food and comfort for months.”
Hundreds of people remain missing in the southeast. Rapidly flowing water destroyed entire communities and damaged tens of thousands of homes. People need shelter, water, food and medical care. It will take time to reach everyone who needs help.

Red Cross response Approximately 1,300 Red Cross members are working tirelessly to provide safe shelter, food, water, and assistance to those in need. More than 200 Red Cross reintegration staff are working to reconnect loved ones despite connectivity issues. We have received approximately 4,000 requests for assistance and that number continues to grow.
In the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida, the Red Cross operates shelters where residents can receive hot meals and psychological support. In the Carolinas, we are working with multi-agency task forces to coordinate feeding efforts and ensure communities receive the assistance they need. And in Florida, we help assess home damage.
Together with our partners, we have already provided tens of thousands of shelter stays, meals and snacks. Emergency response vehicles from across the country are on the streets dispensing meals, water and snacks where it is safe to do so. As families begin to clean out their homes, supplies are gathered. Affected communities face different challenges, have different recovery timelines and require different support.
