Michael Barham, the Chargers’ head of Diversity in the NFL Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative, shared a bit about what the past month has been like.
“It was an amazing experience,” Baham said. “A once in a lifetime experience.”
Now in its third year, the program has allowed Bolt to offer Baham a unique experience.
Barham, a sports medicine student at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, had the opportunity to spend time accompanying Bolt’s director of athlete health, wellness and performance, Marco Zucconi, and his medical staff during training camp last month.
Burnham got a first-hand look at the day-to-day medical tasks required by an NFL team.
“It was a great experience working with the team physicians and athletic trainers and seeing how they take care of the players,” Burnham said. “Not many medical students get to go into an NFL organization and see the care that professional athletes receive.”
“Being able to learn from the team physicians, athletic trainers, nutritionists, everybody, I think it gave me a well-rounded perspective on not just NFL medicine, but medicine in general,” Burnham continued. “It was a great experience.”
He later added, “I came here just to soak it up and learn as much as I could. Instead, just being here and learning from these people has exceeded my expectations.”
