BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – As 2024 draws to a close, we’d like to take a look back at politics.
The politics of 2024 began in January with Gov. Doug Burgum not seeking a third term in office. Kelly Armstrong had been running for re-election to the Legislature, but after Burgum’s announcement, he decided to jump into the gubernatorial race.
Burgum made national news as the first former Republican presidential candidate to endorse President-elect Trump ahead of the Iowa caucuses in January.
North Dakota had three important races in 2024: governorship, U.S. House of Representatives, and Senate. Candidates in each of these races announced their intention to run in February.
Over the next few months, Burgum became Trump’s top surrogate on the campaign trail and appeared on numerous national news programs.
On primary election day, KFYR-TV and other media outlets received complaints about news outlets sending out text messages claiming that Julie Fedorchak had dropped out of the race for a North Dakota House seat. It became. KFYR did not send these messages. They were false. Fedorchak had to address this rumor and subsequently filed a complaint with the FEC.
At the same time, Governor Burgum’s name was among President-elect Trump’s top three running mate candidates, but he ultimately lost to U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio.
Election Day was a close race in North Dakota, with Mr. Armstrong sworn in as governor, Mr. Fedorchak in the House of Representatives, and Mr. Cramer winning re-election to the Senate.
President-elect Trump has selected Governor Burgum to be Secretary of the Interior and Chairman of the National Energy Council.
Mr. Burgum’s last day in office was December 14th, and Mr. Armstrong took over on December 15th.
Important political topics to watch in North Dakota in 2025 include the legislative session that begins on January 7th and the U.S. Senate confirmation hearing for former Governor Doug Burgum, who is seeking to become Secretary of the Interior.
