A few days after spat with Zelensky, Trump says he is considering “massive” sanctions and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire with Ukraine and a peace deal is reached.
This turn takes place after a wave of night strikes in Ukraine.
He writes: “Based on the fact that Russia is now absolutely ‘hilariously ‘hilarious’ on the battlefield, I am strongly considering tariffs, tariffs on Russia until we reach a major bank sanctions, sanctions and tariffs on Russia and a final settlement agreement on peace.
“Go to Russia and Ukraine, go to the table now before it’s too late. Thank you!!!”
Sanctions are penalties imposed on one country on another, to stop it from breaking international law or acting proactively.
Countries including the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Canada and Japan have imposed more than 21,000 sanctions on Russia since its invasion by Ukraine three years ago.
In January, after taking office, Trump warned of tariffs and more sanctions if Putin didn’t end the war.
