The year is 1947. On a beach in Wales, Land Rover’s first innovator, Maurice Wilkes, sketched the silhouette of what would become an icon. From that sketch, Land Rover was born, a vehicle that conquers the most extreme terrain and captures the imagination of adventurers around the world. Decades later, the brand’s commitment to functionality and poise remains strong, and this is evident in the Land Rover Defender, synonymous with rugged elegance.
When I was handed a 2023 Defender 110 V8 for testing in late 2024, I was curious to see how this Icon compared to its modern competitors.
Land Rover: unique market presence
Land Rover vehicles have a unique reputation. According to Carteligent, nearly 69% of Land Rovers are leased, which is significantly higher leasing penetration than most brands. This statistic reflects the target audience: individuals seeking a luxurious, high-performance SUV for short-term ownership. Reliability issues, often discussed by critics, are less of a concern for these drivers, as most Land Rovers are returned before the factory warranty period (4 years or 50,000 miles) expires.
This leasing trend allows Land Rover to focus on delivering luxury and performance at this critical time, and the 2023 Defender 110 V8 embodies this strategy.
excellent performance
The 5.0L powers the Defender 110 V8 supercharged V8 engine, producing an impressive 518 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an advanced all-wheel drive system, this SUV delivers both lively on-road driving and rugged off-road capability. Key performance and offload features include:
• Terrain Response 2: Customizable drive modes for different terrain, including dynamic programs to enhance handling.
• Twin-speed transfer box: Provides both high and low range gearing for off-road challenges.
• Air Suspension and Adaptive Dynamics: Smooth ride with adjustable height for different driving conditions.
• Hill Descent Control and All-Terrain Progress Control: Ride with confidence on steep hills and rough terrain.
• Electronic active differential: enhances traction in difficult conditions.
• 22-inch gloss black wheels with spare tire: Add style and functionality.
The Defender’s offload ability remains unmatched. It can wade through water up to 35.4 inches deep and boasts up to 11.5 inches of ground clearance. Whether you’re climbing a rocky slope or cruising down the street, you’ll stay calm.
Luxury beyond expectations
Inside the Defender 110 V8, practicality meets luxury. Every inch of the cabin oozes sophistication, from the vintage tan Windsor leather seats to the ebony suedecloth steering wheel. Features for great comfort and convenience include:
• Seats: 14-way heated and cooled power front seats with memory and heated rear seats in a 40:20:40 split configuration.
• Climate Control: Three-zone climate control with air quality sensors and cabin ionization for optimal comfort.
• Infotainment: A state-of-the-art 11.4-inch Pivi Pro system combines with a 700W Meridian™ surround sound system to offer compatibility with Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, and SiriusXM®.
• Convenience: Keyless entry, push-button start, and ClearSight rearview mirror improve everyday ease of use.
• Lighting and Glass: Premium LED headlights with automatic high beam assist, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers.
• Storage: Durable rubber flooring and a refrigerator in the center console add to the practicality.
Land Rover has put a lot of effort into making the Defender feel as comfortable in traffic as it does on the trails.
on or off
Driving the Defender 110 V8 is an intuitive experience. Acceleration is quick, reaching 90 mph within 5 seconds. The V8 emits a rich, throaty exhaust note that even my 87-year-old father found thrilling. On-road handling is surprisingly agile for a vehicle of this size, thanks to adaptive dynamics and electric power-assisted steering.
In secluded areas, the Defender shines even more. Features like 3D surround camera and blind spot assist make maneuvering in tight spaces and difficult trails easier. With a towing capacity of up to 7,716 pounds, it can haul heavy loads with ease.
verdict
The Defender 110 V8 is not recommended for long-term ownership without preparing for potential repair costs, but as a short-term lease or ownership with a factory warranty, it’s a standout in the luxury SUV market. The combination of iconic design, cutting-edge features, and superior performance makes it superior to many competing products.
The Defender is more than just a vehicle. It’s an experience. Whether navigating city streets or exploring unknown terrain, it goes above and beyond, just as Maurice Wilkes envisioned it in 1947.
For those brave enough to embrace the adventure, a defender awaits.
