BAY CITY, MI – Here is a look at what’s happening in Bay City area high school sports from August 26-28, 2024. Bay City area coaches are asked to email results, highlights and comments on the night of each event to lthomps2@mlive.com.
Soccer: Western bounces back with win
Bay City Western didn’t let obstacles in the way hold them back for long.
The Warriors had their five-game winning streak snapped by a loss to John Glenn in the Bay County Championship finals, but bounced back with a 5-3 win over Saginaw Valley Lutheran.
Western (6-2) kept scoring to stay within striking distance of the Chargers in nonleague play. Luke Arnold led the offense with a three-goal outburst for his first career hat trick, then scored the final goal on a penalty kick with 4:50 left to seal the win.
Blake Grzesinski scored on a header off a corner kick and had three assists in the win, while Blake Dore had a goal and an assist, and Warriors keeper Logan Courier made a key save on a penalty kick late in the first half.
Soccer: Glen continues his winning streak
John Glenn continues to dominate defensively.
But the offensive team also had their day.
The Bobcats thrashed Alpena 8-0, recording their seventh shutout victory in seven games this season, but the opposing offense was just as impressive, led by Asher Clark’s three goals and three assists.
“He was in top form today, blasting through the backline,” coach Brian Scherzer said.
Dylan D’Eramo also had a big game with two goals and two assists, while Carter Glaza, Paul Noli and Ben Cleland all had one goal each. Landon Kogelman, Landen Beson-Montoya and Dylan Wood also had assists.
Drew Bailey again kept a clean sheet in goal for the Bobcats.
“The guys came out with a lot of energy,” Scherzer said. “Once they got going, they started scoring quickly. I was really impressed with how the guys played and I’m excited to see what they can do.”
Soccer: Late goal plagues Standish
To the defensive specialist, it was a thing of beauty.
Standish-Sterling was held to a scoreless stalemate with Gladwin for the first 77 minutes before Gladwin scored the breakthrough goal in a Jack Pine Conference matchup to win 1-0.
“It hurt to lose in the final minutes considering the effort our guys put in,” Standish coach Doug Dern said. “I’m proud of the improvement our team made tonight. Defensively we were well organized and cohesive. It’s a testament to the hard work and focus our guys put in on the practice field and in the film room.”
Gladwin’s Andrew VonMat finally broke the 0-0 deadlock with the game’s only goal with about three minutes left in the game. Gladwin’s Seth Mead and Standish’s Zach Bell kept things tight with some tough keeper-to-keeper battles.
Golf: Breakthrough round for Glenn
Scores were dropping and John Glenn’s ranking was rising.
It was a great day for the Bobcats at Crooked Creek Golf Course for the Tri-Valley Conference Jamboree.
Leading the way for Glen were Allie Caldwell at 103, Lauren Atkins at 104, Noelle Povantz at 114 and Sydney Barron at 119. Atkins came out on top with her best round for a freshman player.
“From the first practice, I knew it was just a matter of time before she put up a score that would put a smile on her face,” coach Pete Remington said.
Glenn placed fourth in the nine-team tournament with 440 points.
Volleyball: All Saints play thriller
Bay City All Saints fell behind 3-0 at Carrollton Quad but came back to win in a nail-biting three-set match.
The Cougars lost to Merrill 25-16, 22-25, 16-14, while All Saints lost to Bullock Creek 25-14, 25-14 and Carrollton 25-9, 25-20, but finished with a great match.
Galilea Costilla led the Cougars with 26 digs and seven aces.
Golf: Western ace hits new pace
Kayla Montcalm is pacing Bay City Western and it’s a hotly contested race.
The sophomore shot a career-best 45 strokes to lead the Warriors (214) to a win over Essexville Garber (228) at Bay County Golf Course. Montcalm is averaging 47.8 strokes to start the season, more than four strokes per nine better than last year.
Western had great finishes from Natalie List (54th), Sarah Luptowski (57th), Grace Nabergas (58th) and Julia Budzinski (59th). Gerber had great finishes from Jaylyn Schultz (53rd), Marissa Espinoza (54th), Gracie Saucier (57th), Marlee Gerwick (64th) and Aubrey Gross (65th).
