Best known for its Extended Range EV, which is essentially a hybrid, Li Auto has made a bold move into the fully electric vehicle market with the Li MEGA.
The Li MEGA has been launched in a single fully-equipped trim, highlighting its status as the flagship of Li Auto’s line-up, and its premium price of RMB 529,800 makes it clear that this car is aimed at those who want the very best features of an electric MPV.
A unique design philosophy for a new platform
The Li MEGA is a bold, unconventional design built on an all-new platform. Its much-discussed styling is the result of close collaboration between Li Auto’s aerodynamics and design teams. Their goal is to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Aerodynamics played a key role in shaping the MEGA’s unique look. The Li MEGA’s drag coefficient is just 0.215 Cd, making it incredibly efficient for a vehicle of its size. By comparison, the Porsche Taycan has a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd and the XPENG X9 has a drag coefficient of 0.227 Cd.
When design and functionality come together
The front of the Li MEGA features a bullet train-like design highlighted by Li Auto’s Halo 2.0 daytime running lights, while the smooth, steep slope from the nose to the roofline, rising to the B-pillar and tapering towards the trunk, gives the car a sleek, futuristic look.
Flat windows and pillars, and a narrowing boat-tail design towards the rear, help direct the airflow seamlessly over the car before it meets the AeroBlade. The AeroBlade is a flat section at the rear of the MEGA that “slices” through the air, reducing turbulence behind the car – not only does this improve efficiency, it also creates a striking aesthetic look.
Despite its aerodynamic design, the Li MEGA doesn’t compromise on practicality: even with the third row seats in place, there’s 1,054 litres of luggage space, enough for four 28-inch suitcases and two carry-on bags, beating the XPENG X9’s 755 litres. Fold down the third row seats and you’ll have a generous 1,800 litres of luggage space, though slightly less than the X9’s maximum of 2,544 litres.
Luxurious interior and cutting-edge technology
Step into the Li MEGA and you’re enveloped in an ambiance of luxury. Every surface is upholstered in high-quality nappa leather and the technology inside is just as impressive as the materials. A large, fully animated head-up display now features blind spot camera monitors and dual 15.8-inch fourth-generation 3K OLED infotainment screens at the front. There’s also a third larger 17-inch screen at the rear, all with Dolby Vision and powered by the new Snapdragon 8295 high-performance CPU.
Front passengers enjoy queen seats that recline completely flat without moving backwards, the perfect blend of comfort and convenience. The seat massage function has been upgraded from 10 to 16 points of SPA massage, with additional points added to the seat base.
The second-row seats are even more luxurious, with the captain’s chairs offering 95-degree recline and 270-degree ambient heating, meaning the seat backs, bases, armrests and calf rests are all heated for comfort in any weather.
Tech lovers will love the dual 50W wireless chargers and 50W USB charging ports in the second row. The first two rows also come with heating, ventilation and massage features, while the third row is equipped with heating. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a refrigerator that can cool from 0-7°C or heat from 35-50°C.
Additionally, the Li MEGA is equipped with a 21-speaker, 2,160W Dolby Atmos spatial audio surround sound system sourced from the same supplier as Burmester, ensuring an exceptional auditory experience.
Combining space and performance
With an overall length of 5.3 metres and a wheelbase of 3.3 metres (without rear-wheel steering for some reason), the Li MEGA offers unparalleled interior space. Legroom in the second row is comparable to that of a long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series, but the real star of the show is the third row, which offers legroom to rival that of a long-wheelbase model of the BMW 5 Series. Sit in the third row and you’ll be amazed at just how spacious it is.
Li Auto claims the MEGA has a range of 710km, thanks to a low-resistance design and an efficient EV powertrain that delivers 15.9kWh of power per 100km. The 102.7kWh CATL Qilin battery pack allows the Li MEGA to charge in record time.
Super charge with 5C fast charging
With the launch of the Li MEGA, Li Auto is introducing its “5C fast charging” technology, allowing the MEGA to draw an astounding 520 kW of power from a compatible charger. Even at a 60% state of charge, it will still draw 350 kW, adding 500 km of driving range in just 11-12 minutes.
