State-run JJ Hospital is proposing to build a state-of-the-art residential complex within the hospital premises at a cost of Rs 7,280 crore. The ambitious project will replace the hospital’s ageing infrastructure with eight luxury towers, providing a modern and upscale living environment for doctors, nurses and other staff.
For years, healthcare workers at Mumbai’s largest public hospital have expressed concern over the dilapidated facilities on the campus. Responding to their long-standing demands, the state government has approved a luxury redevelopment plan that will see the old buildings demolished and replaced with modern high-rises. These new buildings will not only provide housing, but also a major lifestyle upgrade with parking, tranquil gardens, and even a swimming pool.
The housing plans include a 22-storey tower dedicated to class 1 and 2 staff which will be the centrepiece of the project, replacing the 70-year-old Dhanvantari Building. The new tower will contain 40 spacious three-bedroom flats of 1,152 sq ft each, and 110 two-bedroom flats of 872 sq ft, all designed with comfort and luxury in mind.
The plans also include three 34-storey towers with 612 one-bedroom flats for Class 3 employees, and four towers with 816 modern one-bedroom flats for the often-overlooked Class 4 workers.
“These reforms will not only provide better living conditions but also boost morale and productivity among the hospital’s dedicated staff,” said Dr Pallavi Sapru, dean of JJ Hospital, highlighting that the dilapidated building forces staff, especially the elderly, to use external toilets.
Recognizing these challenges, the Government has approved this premium redevelopment plan with the aim of creating a living environment that reflects the hospital’s commitment to medical excellence. The blueprint for the project has been prepared by the Public Works Department (PWD).
