NEW YORK (AP) — Umpire Nick Murray was struck in the neck by Giancarlo Stanton’s shattered bat in the top of the fifth inning of Sunday’s game between the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies and ejected from the game.
Stanton hit a fly single to left field and his bat broke, hitting the left side of Marley’s mask and knocking it off.
Marley collapsed immediately and was treated by New York’s athletic training staff. Medical personnel rushed onto the field and Marley was carried onto a stretcher to the sound of applause from the crowd.
After New York’s 10-3 victory, MLB announced that Marley had been diagnosed with a concussion and would miss the upcoming series.
“We all wish Nick the best and we’ll see how it goes,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said. “The backline guys have a tough job. It’s not easy. You get yelled at by both benches all game long about balls and strikes. You have to make split-second decisions. It’s tough when you’re trying to do your best with guys yelling at you and then you get hit in the head with a bat. It’s tough to see him get carried away on a stretcher, but you just hope for the best.”
When play resumed, crew chief Marvin Hudson took over behind catcher, and second base umpire Hunter Wendelsted moved from second base to first base.
Marley, 41, played 473 games as a call-up umpire before becoming a full-time official before last season.
