NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – The North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex expansion project is making “visible progress,” according to city officials.
The city released a project update on Friday, revealing that the second phase of the Champions Boulevard widening is a little more than halfway done. As of Friday, the city said contractors are working on drainage and road foundations.
The second phase of the widening work is scheduled to be completed by spring 2025. Once completed, a start date will be set for the third phase of the road widening, for which contracts have already been exchanged and designs completed.
“This expanded facility will allow the city to host larger tournaments, multiple tournaments and special events simultaneously,” the city said in a statement. “Youth sports, especially baseball, softball and soccer, have grown exponentially, and the additional playing fields from this expansion will allow even more local youth to participate in youth sports.”
Items included in the complex-wide expansion include five new soccer fields, six baseball fields and a freshwater pond, as well as walking trails, play areas and picnic shelters.
Work on the complex’s expansion began in May, and as of Friday, site preparation was nearly complete. The city said contractors are digging ponds, grading the land and working on erosion control, with work expected to continue over the next few months.
Officials said next steps will include preparing underground drainage, utility infrastructure and the building site, after which work on the ground will begin.
The city said work is expected to be completed by September 2025.
