The preseason accolades continue for Travis Hunter, with CBS Sports naming him the best player in college football. The recognition comes after being named to several preseason player to watch lists, including AP All-American, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top talents in the country. CBS Sports compiled a list of the 151 best players in the FBS, and Hunter was one of three Colorado Buffaloes players selected.
Described as a “silky smooth cornerback,” Hunter excels in press coverage and has the natural ability to undercut routes and make plays on the ball. His fluidity, excellent handles, and ability to sacrifice his body make him a dynamic presence on the field. Not only does he have the ability to keep pace with his primary receivers, but he also understands offensive patterns and has the ability to compensate with his speed, allowing him to recover even when he’s slightly lost. Now, the question is how the roles of both defensive back and wide receiver will continue to evolve and if this unique versatility will translate to the NFL.
Hunter enters this season as a Heisman Trophy dark horse, and it would be awesome to see this two-way talent in New York at the end of the season, especially considering it’s been 30 years since Rashaan Salaam was CU’s lone winner.
Hunter wasn’t the only Buffaloes defensive star to receive recognition. Defensive lineman B.J. Green ranked 129th on the list, while quarterback Shedul Sanders earned the No. 4 spot. CBS Sports had high praise for Sanders, calling him the best quarterback in college football and projecting him as a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Known for his arm strength, accuracy and poise under pressure, Sanders is poised to lead the Buffaloes this season.
Despite being projected to finish 11th in the Big 12 Conference, Colorado features some of the most talented players in the country, and with Hunter, Green and Sanders leading the way, the Buffaloes are the team to watch in the Big 12 Conference this season.
