After an unexpectedly strong 2022 season, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith signed a three-year contract, which was and still is a year-to-year deal that gives the team the ability to make big plays after either of his first two seasons.
Smith is approaching his third season as a starter and is hoping to become more consistent.
According to USA Today , NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo appeared on a podcast recently and explained that Smith has broached talk of a new contract, and the real question is whether a team will go along with it.
Frankly, there’s no reason for them to do that. He signed when he could have signed with anyone, and the Seahawks probably offered him the best offer at a base value of $75 million over three years.
It could be that Geno just wants more security. Currently, the Seahawks can finish out his contract with a cap charge of just $13.5 million after 2024.
He might also want more money — $25 million is mid-to-low range for a veteran starting pitcher given the current market.
The Seahawks also have Sam Howell in the third year of his rookie contract, and the Seahawks could potentially switch from Smith to Howell or another player after this season, which gives even more reason to believe Smith will stay.
Again, the Seahawks have no reason to do so. Unless the Seahawks determine based on their limited interaction with Howell that he’s never going to be a fit, there’s no reason to keep Smith around beyond 2024, especially with a new coaching staff in place.
