Chelsea discover their Conference League play-off opponents
Chelsea will face Swiss side Servette in the play-off for a place in this season’s UEFA Conference League.
The Blues faced a tough draw earlier this month, with their Europa League qualifiers facing either Servette or Braga unlike any other opponent.
Servette drew 0-0 in Portugal last week and lost 2-1 at home on Thursday, with Braga advancing to the Europa League and Servette losing in a Conference League playoff to Chelsea.
Chelsea will play the first leg at Stamford Bridge on 22 August before traveling to Switzerland for the return leg seven days later on 29 August.
Who is Servette?
Servette have played their football in Switzerland’s top flight for the past six seasons and have enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months last year, reaching the last 16 of the Conference League before winning the Swiss Cup, their first major trophy in 23 years.
They finished third in the Swiss Pro League last year, one point behind second place and 13 points behind eventual winners Young Boys.
The 2024/25 season has already begun, and Servette are currently fifth in the league, having won three and lost two of their opening five games, having conceded 13 goals in those five games, the most in that time.
Chelsea have little experience on the Swiss soil in recent years, having not played a competitive match in Switzerland since 2013, but they did play against Servette in a post-season friendly in 1946, winning 2-0.
