UMSON Receives $5 Million Grant to Expand Health Equity Initiative in West Baltimore

The five-year grant builds on the success of the collaborative’s work to reduce isolation and inequities in cardiovascular health in West Baltimore, and aims to improve health outcomes and address the social determinants of health.
The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has been awarded a five-year, $5 million Health Equity Resource Community (HERC) grant from the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (MCHRC). The grant builds on the success of the West Baltimore RICH Collaborative, an initiative supported by a $2.4 million Pathways for Health Equity grant awarded by MCHRC two years ago. The effort focuses on reducing social isolation and inequities in cardiovascular health in West Baltimore.
Similar to the original effort, a new project in partnership with community, faith, academic and medical organizations, called Reducing Inequities in Cardiovascular and Mental Health in West Baltimore, Stronger Together (RICH 2.0), aims to reduce cardiovascular health disparities, improve health outcomes, improve access to primary care and reduce health care costs. The project has expanded to three zip code areas in West Baltimore and will extend beyond social isolation to other aspects of mental health.
The project is led by Yolanda Ogbolu (PhD ’11, MS ’05, BSN ’04, NNP, FNAP, FAAN), the Bill and Joan Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and is supported by project directors Janette North-Kabore, MPH, and Asunta Johnson, MSHCM.
