While the individual accolades are great, for the St. Edmond junior duo of Hunter Horn and Jacob Coupman, they see themselves as small pieces of a much larger picture.
Horn and Koopman were named all states in boys basketball by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association on Monday along with Logan Moline from Manson Northwest Webster and Ben Helmers from Algona.
Horn landed in the Class 1A first team and the Gales’ third team that advanced to the state semifinals. Moline was the third team choice in 2A, while Helmer made the second team in 3A.
In addition to joining a 1,000-point club for his career, Horn has scored 609 points this past season, ranking seventh in all 1As. He averaged 24.4 points per contest, adding nearly 10 rebounds with 43 assists, 34 steel and 22 blocks while shooting 60% off the field.
“That has been my goal for a long time and it feels great to be able to show that my efforts have paid off (as it’s called All-State). Horn said. “We couldn’t do it without the support of all our coaches and teammates.
“We have unfinished business next year. That’s the overall end goal. We’re going back to the state tournament and compete for that championship.”
Horn heads into his senior season within strike distance with St. Edmond’s career scoring record. He currently scores 1,106 points in 50 games, with just 434 points passing Andrew Gibb.
Koopman scored 278 points this season with 206 rebounds, 65 assists, 58 steel and 16 blocks, shooting 60% off the field and 73% on the free throw line. He led the Gales with 18 points in the quarterfinals through Woodbine, just 11 days after suffering a serious leg injury in the underwater final.
“It’s a great honor to be named Zenshu.” Koopman said. “I couldn’t do that without my coaches and teammates, especially Hunter. He brings great attention from other teams.
St. Edmond won 20 games for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign and placed second in the North Central Conference. Both Horn and Coopman are all-league picks, and Horn also earned the honors of a team with total replacement.
Moline, who continues his career by signing with Buena Vista University, became the career scoring leader for Manson Northwest Webster this season. He averaged 20.8 points on 8.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists per game and almost two steals, making the Cougars a first-time program record since MNW integration nearly 35 years ago, reaching the Subgenbe Finals for the first time.
“(Named All-State) shows the time and hard work that they’ve tried to play and try to improve in the game.” Moline said. “Even if I had family, friends, teammates and coaches, I couldn’t do it without the coach who helped me along the way.
“I hope that younger generations of kids are looking at what I’ve done and strive to achieve great things.”
A three-year starter for Manson Northwest Webster, Moline ended his career with 1,421 points with 549 rebounds, 199 assists, 135 steels and 48 blocking shots.
The Helmers scored 26.4 points per game with 83 rebounds, 62 steels, 43 assists and 13 blocks for the Bulldogs, and 26.4 points per game.
“I am very honored to be selected again.” Helmer said. “I couldn’t get to this point without the support of my teammates and fans. The coaching staff pushed me and helped me improve this year and throughout my entire career at Argona.”
A three-year starter and Argona’s four-time letter winner, Helmer scored 1,509 points with 370 rebounds, 184 steels, 147 assists and 53 blocks.
Jamison Paw, a senior who attended school in Fort Dodge before moving to Ames, was selected for the 4A second team after helping Little Cyclone reach the state tournament. Bode Goodman, grandson of former FDSH head coach, All-Star Tom Goodman and nephew of former dogger star Jay Goodman, has landed on the 4A’s first team for his efforts at Walkie Northwest this season. The Wolves were the state runner-up.
Valley’s Trevinzilak was selected as Iowa Basketball after leading the Tigers to their third consecutive 4A state title. Zilak heads to the University of Iowa to continue his basketball career.
