Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday that some city workers in New York City could continue working on a hybrid schedule under the city’s expanding pilot program.
The one-year extension allows eligible urban workers to work remotely from May 31, 2026 to May 31, 2026.
The city and its largest civil servants union, District Council 37, previously agreed to a pilot program in May 2023. It officially began on June 1, 2023.
“As we continue to settle in the post-pandemic reality, we must ensure that city employment continues to be an attractive and accessible option for working-class New Yorkers who serve and run the city every day,” Adams said in a statement. “I have always said that we must acknowledge the reality that the flexible work programmes the city offers have roles that cannot be performed remotely.”
“This successful pilot expansion will allow us to continue the flexibility of our workforce and protect the core services that New Yorkers rely on every day,” he added.
As part of the 2023 agreement, city and district council 37 leadership has established a “Work Flexibility Committee” that will help promote discussion on topics ranging from job flexibility to employee morale, the release said.
The city said it will continue to work with the union to monitor the progress of the pilot program.
