Is political science research exploring gender and LGBTQIA+ politics still underestimated in top journals of discipline? This article examines publication trends in gender and LGBTQIA+ research from five top political science journals (comprehensive) from 2017 to 2023. Gender research and LGBTQIA+ studies are found to account for 5% to 7% of studies published in selected top journals. However, most of this study is about gender politics rather than LGBTQIA+ politics. Overall, gender research and LGBTQIA+ research appear primarily in top journals when it comes to compliance with methods and authors’ gender disciplinary norms. The majority of published gender and LGBTQIA+ studies are quantitative. Gender studies of male authors are also overrepresented as authors of LGBTQIA+ Research, at a rate almost three times the membership in the American Political Science Association’s Women, Gender and Political Studies section. This study suggests that editorial team signaling influences which manuscripts land in journals.
