Jordan Childs broke her silence about the controversial decision to strip her of her bronze medal, issuing a statement on Thursday saying she “feels unjust” about the situation.
“I am at a loss for words. This decision is unjust and a huge blow not only to me but to everyone who has supported my journey,” Childs wrote. “What’s even more heartbreaking is the unprovoked racist attacks on social media that are wrong and extremely hurtful.”
Last week, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Sunday that Chilis’ coach was four seconds late in requesting an investigation to review the scores for the floor exercise final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, the investigation was accepted at the time and found that Chilis’ score had been underestimated.
She came in third due to an incorrect score and won the bronze medal.
But a CAS ruling reinstated her original scores and lowered her ranking, and the International Olympic Committee said Sunday it was asking Chile to return the medal and reassign it to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbos, who retroactively placed third in the event.
USA Gymnastics is appealing the decision, pointing out several problems it has with the process requested in an appeal from Romanian authorities. It said CAS notified the wrong U.S. authorities too late, failed to properly review the case and failed to notify the process.
The court also said it had time-stamped video evidence showing that Superintendent Childs submitted the investigation within 47 seconds of the one-minute deadline. But the court said in a statement that the rules do not allow for a review of the decision in light of new evidence.
USA Gymnastics said it would continue to fight for Chile.
Childs thanked USA Gymnastics for the support and outpouring of love and support they’ve received following the news.
“I will approach this challenge like any other and will do everything in my power to ensure justice is served,” Childs wrote. “I have faith that at the end of this journey, those in power will do the right thing.”
