Students will experience French sports culture at “Vive le Sport” in France
Twelve Seton Hall University undergraduates have recently embarked on a Vive Le Sport study abroad trip to France, a journey of experiential learning that combines French sports and culture. The candidate for the University of Human Development, Culture and Media (CHDCM), who lived in France for nine years, led by Stillman School of Business marketing professor Dr. Daniel Ladik and PhD Alex Requena, offered a direct exposure to international sports management and media practices.
The group visited three cities: Paris, Lyon and Marseille, embracing new cultures, languages and lifestyles while immersing themselves in the European sports landscape. Among the students were Jeremy’s sons, Sean Casey and Jonathan Rivera, of CHDCM’s Sports Media Program. For many, it was their first trip to Europe, broadening their perspective on the global sports industry.
Paris: Exploring Olympic Heritage and Professional Sports
The trip began in the French capital, and this year the summer Olympics were held. Students explored the Olympic heritage and visited important venues in the game. Highlights included meetings with Paris Saint-Germain executives, taking part in a 4-1 victory over Lille at Park des Princess. The group also saw Paris basketball, owned by American investors, compete in an Euroleague match at the Adidas Arena against Fenerbahce. A visit to Roland Garros, home to the French opening, further enriched our understanding of France’s rich sports history. Cultural activities included a visit to Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. It has recently resumed, which has resumed after years of repairs.
Lyon: A blend of sports and food
The second stop was Lyon, a city known for its powerful sports culture and world-class cuisine. The students toured the LDLC Arena, home to the Asvel Lyon Basketball team, and owned Tony Parker and Groupama Stadium, home to Olympic Lyon, where the US Women’s National Team won the 2019 World Cup. Beyond sports, the group explored Lyon’s culinary scene and historic landmarks, experiencing firsthand why the city is considered the gastronomic capital of France.
Marseille: Passion for soccer and the Grand Finale
The trip ended in Marseille, with students visiting the iconic Orange Verodrome, France’s second largest stadium and home to the Olympics des Marseilles (OM). They took part in an OM match with RC Lens and experienced the passionate atmosphere of French football. Nature walking through the stunning Carlanquez National Park was a highlight along with a side trip to Aix en Provence. Students also participated in an exchange session with the Masters of Sports Management Degree at KEDGE Business School Marseille, gaining a comparative perspective on sports business education.
Student perspective: Life-changing experiences
“Traveling has always been my biggest hobby. In my first time in post-covid, high school third year and high school, I was able to travel to Europe with my family. France was on the bucket list.
“Seton Hall emphasizes the importance of global experiences for students where international perspectives can enhance career opportunities,” Radik said. “The University is grateful to the teams and organizations that hosted students and provided invaluable insights into the world of sports business and media. Their generosity and expertise made this trip a transformative educational experience for all participants.”
