On March 17, 1925, Deseret News released its annual All-State Boys Basketball Team.
And hoping for who will form the team was undoubtedly great, just like today.
For the record, the first teams of the season were guarding Dixie High’s Lund, forward Murray’s Watts, center Nephi’s Worthington, Provo’s Collins and Dixie’s breaks.
Interestingly, there is no first name. Squad includes a second team and Roll of Honor.
Think of the Deseret News Sports team as celebrating high school athletes with their performances for over 100 years.
High school football games have been held in Utah since 1898 and have been held in boys’ basketball since 1929, since all state teams have been listed on the Deseret News High School Sport website.
High school basketball all-state teams are listed back in the 1907-08 season.
Since then, Deseret News has continued to cover unparalleled high schools, ranging from early sports to 25 boys and girls in each grade. And Deseret News honors outstanding people with an all-state team designation.
In the current format, all-state teams are selected by the coaches of teams that compete each season. Additionally, for the past 30 years, Deseret News has followed the same pattern in other sports, selecting MVP and Mr. Basketball winners (20 years).
