Titleist has released a short film that graphs the journey of master craftsman Bob Vokey to create a specialist spin-milling wedge that has become dominant with professional tours and retailers over the past 25 years.
The Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges account for 56% of the Gap, Sand and Rob wedges currently playing on the PGA Tour, with players using Vokey Wedges winning 30 events on the 2024 PGA Tour, including three major championships.
“Creating Modern Wedges | Bob Vokey and The Spin Milled Story,” the film takes viewers to create the very first spin-milling wedges of Vokey in 2001 and create the instant momentum gained on tour. The performance of the spin-milled wedge was different from the performance of the predecessors of its wedges, as evidenced by low-flight high-spin wedge shots that players began to hit in new grooves.
“You were playing wedge shots, you flew it high and landed it softly,” said Corey Gerrard, marketing director at Vokey Wedges. “All of a sudden, you smash the spin on your hand. It was almost the opposite. You fly the ball low, penetrate, invade, offensive ball flight, take one big hop and stop next to the pin. It became the shot that everyone wanted to hit that low, and it’s still a great wedge shot recipe.”
Despite the success and rapid adoption of spin-milling wedges from tour players and amateurs, the journey has not been without challenges. The film continues to innovate, covering the impact of the 2007 Glue Brule change, unique opportunities to serve hundreds of tour players around the world, and the relentless drives from Bob Vokey and his team.
