The tariffs that President Trump has imposed on Canada, Mexico and China have not only led to the launch of a trade war, but also led to a global consumer backlash from “boycott USA” on US goods.
Over the past seven days, “Boycott USA” has skyrocketed on Google with European countries and Canada at the top of the list. Additionally, multiple countries also have Facebook groups dedicated to boycotting US products.
Trump’s plan to take over Denmark’s semi-automatic territory Greenland is one of the reasons for this resistance. The Danish Facebook group has around 73,000 members, with the second highest number of searches behind Luxembourg.
Sweden is Google’s fourth largest “boycott USA” search region with 80,000 members. Their Facebook page is the “best weapon” of drives against US goods, the platform.
Meanwhile, France is ranked third on Google, with 20,000 members.
Canada, the US’s closest ally, is also the forefront of Boycott USA development, ranking fifth on Google for “Boycott USA” search. There is a hat “Canada is not for sale.” The latter cancelled Elon Musk’s $100 million contract with Starlink.
Several Canadian provinces have pulled American-made alcohol from store shelves. Lawson Whiting, CEO of Brown Forman behind Jack Daniels, has denounced Canada’s retaliation, calling it “disproportionate” to “worst than tariffs” and “disproportionate” US taxation.
“I mean, that’s worse than tariffs because it literally takes away your sales and completely removes our products from the shelves,” Whiting said.
A survey last month found that in a survey of 3,310 people, 98% said they were looking for “made in Canada” when reading the aisles.
The American Travel Association warns that a 10% trip reduction could result in “expenditure losses of $2.1 billion and 14,000 job losses” due to Canadians not traveling. Compared to the previous year, the number of Canadians on road trips last month fell by 23%.
Furthermore, Tesla masks have seen a major decline around the world. In Germany, where Musk supports far-right parties, sales fell almost 70% compared to last January. For each time magazine, Tesla sold 7,517 vehicles in Europe in January. According to Reuters, Tesla lost 50% in Portugal and 45% in France, but 42% in Sweden and 48% in Norway.
Trump also said this week in the Truth Society that “radical left madman is trying to boycott Tesla illegally and republically, as often as he does.”
