That led to protests from Atletico, where manager Diego Simeone claimed that “the ball doesn’t move,” challenged journalists at his postmatch press conference about the decision, and the court accused Atletico of “crying.”
In addition to the statement, UEFA released frame-by-frame footage on Thursday.
“Atletico de Madrid asked UEFA about the incident, which disallowed the kick from the penalty mark taken by Julian Alvarez at the end of yesterday’s match against Real Madrid against the UEFA Champions League,” UEFA said.
“Though minimal, the player rose to contact the ball before kicking, as shown in the attached video clip. Under current rules (Game Law, Law 14.1), the VAR had to instruct the judge that the VAR should allow the goal.
“UEFA will enter discussions between FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rules should be reviewed if the double touch is clearly not intentional.”
IFAB is the board of directors of the International Football Association and is the agency responsible for the laws of the game and proposed changes.
The Alvarez incident caused confusion inside the stadium on Wednesday, with many phenomena not initially aware that spot kicks were not allowed, and later made a postmatch protest by Atletico, led by Simeone.
Atletico dominated Wednesday’s long spell encounter, winning 1-0 in the night thanks to a goal from Conor Gallagher just 27 seconds later.
