Not many people predicted the current plight of the Pittsburgh Steelers a month or a week ago, but here we are. The Steelers are waiting to see if Aaron Rodgers will play for them in 2025 after failing attempts to re-sign Justin Fields.
Pittsburgh has been waiting throughout the second day of the NFL in a legal tampering period to get answers from the Steelers, Giants and even Rogers, who is reportedly retired.
“Aaron Rodgers has taken the entire Steelers organization hostage,” former NFL general manager Doug Willie said fans on Wednesday via Steelers Depot on 93.7.
There are conflicting reports as to when the Steelers will get answers from Rogers. Many are hoping for a resolution this week, but NFL Media reported Wednesday morning that it could be weeks before a decision is made.
Pittsburgh’s current challenge began when the field could not be re-signed before the league’s tampering period began. Money reportedly was one of the reasons the Steelers were unable to make the deal. Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports reported that the Steelers did not guarantee the money after the first year. Field ultimately set the terms in a two-year, $40 million deal with New York, which includes a $30 million guarantee.

Cody Benjamin

After Fields was removed from the photo, the Steelers focused on Rogers and Sam Darnold, according to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Darnold I agreed to a 3-year, $100 million deal Along with the Seahawks, they left Rogers as their main option.
On Tuesday, after a two-day period in which Pittsburgh made a deal with wideout DK Metcalf and agreed with free agents Malik Harrison and Darius Slay, Steelers general manager Omar Khan spent the day focusing on his quarterback position. And while they were waiting to hear from Rogers, the Steelers reportedly contacted former Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph Possibility of reunion. Pittsburgh also has not ruled out the possibility of re-signing Russell Wilson.
The Steelers may decide to wait for Rogers to make a decision, but if that were the case, they would need a contingency plan if Rogers decides to go in a different direction. Pittsburgh currently doesn’t have one quarterback on its roster. It’s a reported call from Pittsburgh to Rudolph, as it needs to change quickly regardless of Rogers’ situation.
One thing you certainly know is that the Steelers are all in on Rogers after missing the field. It’s not anyone’s guess yet if Rogers decides to go to Pittsburgh and when that decision is made.
