The captain of the cargo ship that collided with a stationary tanker in the North Sea was a Russian citizen, the ship’s owner confirmed with AFP on Wednesday.
British police arrested a man after an Ernst Lass-owned Solon freighter struck a layered US Stena Inmaculate on Monday, and it was estimated that a member of the crew was killed.
“Ernst Rath confirms that the Master is a Russian citizen,” the company said in a statement to AFP. “The rest of the crew is made up of Russian and Filipino citizens.”
The confirmation follows the arrest of a 59-year-old man on Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with an incident off the northeast coast of England.

Ernst Rath said the man, who was arrested by Humberside police, was the captain of the Russian Portuguese shaking Solon.
On Monday morning, Solon collided with a stationary Stena Immaculate from about 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the hull’s northeastern port, with both ships lit.
The incident also led to jet fuel from tankers leaking into the North Sea, raising questions about the environment and wildlife concerns and the causes of the crash.
The tanker fire had “decreased significantly without visible flames” by Tuesday evening, while the amount of jet fuel released into the ocean remained “uncertain” according to US-based operator Crowley.
“The first review shows that the effects are limited due to fire exposure and evaporation of jet A1 fuelCrawley said in a statement.

The British Coast Guard, which led the rescue operation, saved 36 people on Monday, including the entire 23 crew of Stena Immaculate, which was chartered by the US military.
However, members of Solon’s crew remained missing and are estimated to be British MPs due to Mike Kane in the transport.
“I think it’s speculation if there was a foul play,” he said of the crash. “There is no evidence to suggest that at this time.”
The Stena Immaculate was in the short-term US military charter with military Sealift headquarters. Military Sealift Command operates civilian ships for the US Department of Defense.
According to data from the Vesselfinder website, the tanker was evacuated “more than 400 meters” due to the crash.
The Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday that Irish officials discovered a lack of Solong emergency steering compass during daily safety inspections last year. This defect was one of ten that attracted attention during an inspection by the ship’s visit to Dublin in July 2024.
UK law enforcement is investigating air quality and environmental impacts in the North Sea and has begun enquiries about how cargo ships collide with tankers.

We face unprecedented challenges. The Russian prosecutor’s office has designated the Moscow Times as an “unwanted” organization, putting our work at risk of criminalizing and prosecuting staff. This follows previous unfair labeling as a “foreign agent.”
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. Authorities argue that our work “does not trust the decisions of Russian leaders.” We see things differently. We strive to provide accurate and impartial reports on Russia.
