The US was avoided by European allies after it was not invited to the Top Security Summit, which has more than 30 countries attended in France on Tuesday, an unidentified French official told The Associated Press.
Newsweek reached out to the Pentagon via email for comment.
Why is it important?
The European Security Summit has been growing concerns as tensions with Ukraine over peace talks with Russia have risen, leading to growing concerns over President Donald Trump’s alienation of European allies.
The lack of US invitations could suggest that Europe and other Ukrainian allies have lost confidence that Washington can effectively mediate negotiations between Moscow and Kiev and achieve peace.

What do you know
Almost all military authorities of 32 NATO members will convene in France to discuss the creation of Ukrainian international security forces on March 11, with the exception of the United States.
Ukrainian international security forces will be established to discourage Russia from launching another attack after a ceasefire is achieved. The ideas for creating the military came from France and the UK. This has led the provision of military and financial aid in Ukraine since tensions worsened in the United States.
Anonymous French officials said Paris and London are working with the troops’ plans intended to be a “possible and willing” coalition of nations that are part of efforts to protect Ukraine, and could include stockpiles of heavy equipment and weapons that could rush in hours or days to help Kiyif defend the attacks in the event that Russia attacks violate the attacks that occur.
French officials also said the talks in Paris consisted of two parts. The first presentation of the blueprint for the French and British Union, and the second focuses on “more accurate and concrete” discussions.
An unidentified French official said the US was not invited because “we want to demonstrate that European countries can take responsibility for most of Ukraine’s post-patient security framework.”
Countries where participants are included include Ireland, Cyprus, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Korea, and Ukraine.
The summit comes after tensions between the US and Ukraine due to Washington’s peace negotiations with Russia and the unstable meeting between Ukrainian President Voldy Mee Zelensky and Trump at the White House.
The US and Russia have been heavily criticized by Kiev and European allies who negotiated peace talks in Saudi Arabia on February 18, accusing Washington of standing by Ukraine and claiming they made concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin before talks began.
Tensions between Washington and Kiev have worsened as the US president called Ukraine to hold elections and called Zelensky a “an election-free dictator.”
Zelensky and Trump met in their oval offices on February 28th to discuss the Ukraine ceasefire and the potential security guarantees. Leaders, along with Vice President JD Vance, engaged in a passionate debate where Trump called Zelensky “disrespectful” and called on him to return only when the Ukrainian president left and “ready for peace.”
European allies criticized Trump’s actions during their meeting with Zelensky and repeatedly supported Ukraine on social media.
After the meeting, Trump stopped providing all military aid and sharing US-generated information with Ukraine.
