X’s billionaire owner Elon Musk claimed on Monday that the social media platform was the target of a “massive cyberattack” after the outages were unavailable for thousands of users.
“There was a massive cyberattack on X,” Musk said in the post.
“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,” he argued, adding that “there is a large, coordinated group and/or country involved.”
Musk criticizes “Ukrainian IP address”
In an interview with Fox Business, Musk said that the computer system used in the suspicious attack appeared to have an IP address in Ukraine, but did not immediately provide evidence of his claim.
However, some cybersecurity experts stressed that this does not necessarily mean an attack that took place in Ukraine.
Nearly 40,000 users first reported issues at peak outages (UTC at 2pm) during peak outages, according to the tracking site downdetector.com.
The number then fluctuates, dropping significantly before rising around noon, reaching almost 35,000, then falling again.
X, previously Twitter, has experienced several glitches since Tech Mogul Musk acquired the platform in 2022.
