According to the Vatican, Pope Francis’ prognosis was “released” on Monday, marking his 25th consecutive day at the hospital.
“The improvements recorded the previous day are further integrated, as confirmed by both blood tests and clinical objectivity. For these reasons, the doctors have decided to lift the prognosis.”
Vatican sources told ABC News that the lifting of Francis’ prognosis means he is no longer in immediate danger, but the clinical picture remains complicated.
Regardless of improvement, the 88-year-old Pope will continue with “additional days, pharmacological therapy in a hospital setting,” due to the “complexity of the clinical picture and the serious infectious picture presented at admission,” the Vatican said.

The nun will be attending the prayer of Pope Francis’ Rosary at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Monday, March 10th, 2025.

Francis’ doctor said there were positive signs of a clergyman’s recovery, according to Vatican sources, but caution remains.
The Pope will return to non-invasive mechanical ventilation and continue antibiotic treatment, Vatican sources said.
On Monday morning, Francis was able to participate in spiritual exercises for Roman Curia for Lent, received the Eucharist and “for a moment I went to the chapel of my private apartment to pray,” the Vatican said.
He continued to participate in spiritual exercises via video links, and spent the rest of the afternoon alternating prayer and rest, the Vatican said.
Francis was admitted to Gemeri Hospital in Rome on February 14th and was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.
On Sunday, Francis thanked his Angelus address – his weekly address – the doctors and nurses who were caring for him at the hospital.
“During my long-term hospitalization here, I also experience the kindness of service and kindness of care, especially the kindness of care from doctors and healthcare workers who I am truly grateful for,” the Pope said.
Thursday marks the 12th anniversary of Francis’ vote to replace Pope Benedict XVI, who had previously resigned.
