Buffalo – On top of the horns finishing the Section VI Class AAA Championship Girls basketball game held at the Buffalo State Sports Arena on Sunday night, the Jamestown player retreated to the bench.
But judging by their body language, they probably wouldn’t have known that the third seeded red and green lost to No. 1 Lancaster 67-46.
Jamestown certainly didn’t act in the dumpster.
In fact, junior Anna Engquist picked up eighth grader Carly Daniels, who exchanged long hugs. They slapped their hands and smiled at each other as Engquist placed her teammates. And when the legend was winning the post-match awards, all the players wearing Jamestown applauded enthusiastically to support their rivals.
It was no wonder Red & Green head coach Ken Ricker had the look of a winning coach when he asked the team to take a photo of the team after the game was over.

“The second half of the season has gotten better and better,” he said. “It was really huge for us when the first (Erie County Governance Conference Division 1) won and after a heartbreaking loss, a bit more confident.”
In the end, Lancaster (17-3) was too talented, too deep, and had two experiences. The fourth quarter run was open, with the legendary lead not falling below 12 points for the rest of the day.
McKenna Colcoran scored 22 points, while Mississippi’s state-bound Madison Francis added 12 points.
Sophomore McKena Pryce led Jamestown (13-8) with 13 points, with eighth grade Nayani Reid getting seven chips and Engquist getting chips in the sixth.
“My goal was (reaching the section title game),” Ricker said. “To be honest, I wasn’t sure if I could even try to compete a little, but I did some good offensively.”
First, Red and Green were not threatened by Lancaster, wiping out two regular-season meetings with a total of 57 points. In fact, Jamestown finished the first quarter with a 10-5 run and followed 24-18.
Red and Green were closed within 24-21 in the first minute of the second quarter, Engquist scored from the low block with a low drop step movement, and Pryce hit one of the two charity toasts. However, the Legend answered with that dominant five-minute stretch, leading a 3-point lead to a 43-25 advantage in five minutes. Jamestown ended a strong period as Price paired the 3-pointer with Engquist and Daniels to convert three of the four free throws to reduce the deficit to 43-31 at the break.
After the break, the Legend started the third quarter using a 12-4 surge, building a 20-point advantage that never reached the remaining under 15s in the remaining games.
The victory advanced Lancaster to Class AAA Far West Regional on Friday, returning to Buffalo for a return against the Section V team. For Red & Green, the season ends with a record of nearly twice the 2023-24 team.
“They’ve got better,” Ricker said. “It’s all the credit of these kids. I coach hard, but they know it’s all in love. I see the best every day. I see what they haven’t seen yet, and they’re 13 years old (years) so they shouldn’t. I keep telling them it’s there…and no one has disappeared. The fact that they’ve gained this confidence will carry over. …I hope our kids feel like they’ve won.”
